We were heading south along highway 5, looking for our next great boondocking spot. The problem was that we had limited time there as a group. I had to be back in Texas of all places by early March. But we wanted to explore the whole peninsula, all the way down to Cabo. So the conflict was wanting to stop at every cool boondocking spot versus making miles south to get to Cabo. The miles won the debate this time. We decided that the stuff along highway 5 was more of the same. It was time to head inland, then back out to the coast further south at Bahia de los Angeles! First Baja beach boondocking

San Felipe was nice to explore and has some great eateries.  The campground we were in was OK, but we were hankering for some Baja beach boondocking. For me, that was what hooked me on going to Baja Mexico in the first place.  A quiet beach was a bucket list item for me down here. Spots were researched going south. What would we end up at?

So our first boondocking spot was a bit more adventurous than we would have preferred. No RVer likes unexpected soft sand trying to take their rig into the abyss. Instead of travel for a couple of months, I had home improvement projects at a friends plus a few side adventures in the area. If you want more of my travels, you’ll have to wait for the next post, or skip down to the end of this post for the little bits of other stuff I did besides building. My largest project was to build two sheds: one out of old school wood, and one from a kit primarily out of plastic. Summer work

My journey through Southern Alberta took me back to Calgary for a few days, then up to Didsbury for an extended stay. I was going to be building a couple of sheds, upgrading a parking pad, and performing a few small build/maintenance items where I was staying. I thought I might get away with a month, but it turned into more like two months to get everything done. I’m not on a schedule or such, but that was a good chunk of time not out camping! Edwards Lake was my next destination, at a campsite that I would say is in my top ten favorite spots. I was here early enough that I thought there was a good chance the spot would be available, which it was. I was seeing nice warm spring weather finally, with little wind. It was going to be perfect to get the kayak out on the lake for some extended paddling.

Kootenay Lake chills

Happy unknown SR605141My early return to Canada meant I was likely to be colder than I’d like. I’d come to Kootenay Lake, which tends to be a bit warmer thanks to the water, but it was still cold. I was paying for camping in Kokanee Chalets and RV park. There was still snow on the ground in the park, that did not bode well for going out on the forestry roads to boondock. I was hoping for proper spring to arrive, with warmer temperatures and melting snow so I could move over to a free and better camping spot. Continue reading →

Mad dash to Canada

I only had a week left of my time allowed in the States, so it was time to really put on some miles and get back to Canada. It was going to be two long days of driving, then a short day to get to the border. It sucks that I am not seeing much of the northern half of the continental USA, but that is the way it works out usually – being chased south by winter and chased north by the six month stay deadline in the spring. In my case, it was only a 5 month stay as I had been in the States previously for a month in the spring. This was putting me back in Canada in late March, a bit early for spring in most parts of the country. But I had a plan to mitigate this somewhat. Continue reading →

Expected and unexpected finds heading north

I was heading north on my own again, with a long travel day ahead of me. My goal was to make it back to Mesquite, Nevada where I had previously scouted out some cool potential boondocking spots. I expected to find a  good spot,  one even had a great view of the Virgin River valley.
